Paleo Hammock – Florida Master Naturlist Training Field Trip

DSCN0098As part of the University of Florida’s Master Naturist Training Program, field trips are required to study the flora and fauna close up. This picture shows what is commonly referred to as a wild coffee plant, common at the site we visited. The plant is utilized by many butterfly and bird species, including cardinals, mockingbirds, catbirds and spicebush swallowtail butterflies. Shiny-leafed wild coffee also contains a chemical that is hallucinogenic and may even eventually prove to have medicinal applications. The seeds were once used as a coffee substitute.
